Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vigo County’s vision is to build professionally-supported, dynamic relationships which unite children with committed volunteers, transforming their lives and enriching families and communities. Our work is as elementary as putting a friend in a child’s life and as essential as putting hope into a child’s future.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vigo County’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth, primarily through a professionally-supported one-to-one relationship with a caring adult. The goal is to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become confident, competent, and caring individuals, by providing committed volunteers, local and national leadership, and standards of excellence.
National studies show the positive impact between mentoring and youth development. Of youth who are involved in a professionally-supported one-to-one relationship with a caring adult:
- 46% are less likely to begin using drugs
- 27% are less likely to begin using alcohol
- 33% are less likely to bully or hit someone
- 52% are less likely to skip school
- 37% are less likely to skip a class
